The Classic Ford Bronco: First Generation (1965–1977)

When you conjure up images of classic American automobiles, the early Ford Bronco is one of the first models to come to mind. Explore some Ford Bronco history to go with that dreamy image below:

  • Ford Bronco history starts with the early Ford bronco being developed as an off-road-capable passenger vehicle with a unique chassis.
  • Today’s Bronco is considered a mid-size SUV, thanks to its 100.4-inch wheelbase.
  • The first Ford Bronco sported a 105-hp inline-6 engine, inspired by the past engine of the Ford Falcon
  • The very first Bronco was a no-nonsense model that had an unmistakable charm. This vehicle could stand the test of time and the elements.

Other Early Ford Bronco Models

Each iteration of the classic Ford Bronco brought something fresh and exciting to the table. Learn more about the legacy of the Ford Bronco here:

Second Generation (1978-1980)

The second generation of the Ford Bronco emerged as a full-size SUV. The new chassis was adapted from the Ford F-series, the wheelbase was extended by 12 inches, and the body style merged into a three-door wagon.

Third Generation (1980-1986)

The third-generation Ford Bronco was a forward-thinking model. Despite offering a smaller and lighter body, this SUV was still able to retain a full-size classification and an F-Series chassis.

Ford Bronco II (1983-1990)

Within just a few years of the release of the third Ford Bronco, the Bronco II was unveiled. This unique compact SUV line was similar to the original Ford Bronco, and was developed in conjunction with the 1983 Ford Ranger.

Fourth Generation (1987-1991)

This generation of Bronco retained the same chassis as the third, but received a wide range of interior and exterior updates. This model is particularly notable in Ford Bronco history as it included the Silver Anniversary Edition, the first to sport leather seating.

Fifth Generation (1992-1996)

The fifth-generation Bronco saw mild updates that built upon the successes of previous models. Additional safety features and exterior upgrades were added to this generation of Bronco.

The 2021 Ford Bronco: Built for Today and Tomorrow
